Arterial blood gases | Determines the concentration of gases |
Blood culture | Checks for bacteria or other microorganisms in a blood sample ( most cultures check for bacteria ) A minimum of 10 ml of blood is taken through veni puncture and injected into two or more âblood bottlesâ |
Negative results in a blood culture indicate what? | Negative results indicate that no bacteria or other micro organisms were found in the blood |
Positive results in a blood culture indicate what ? | Positive results indicate that bacteria or another microorganism was found in the blood |
What is done following positive blood culture results ? | Following positive results a sensitivity test is done to see which antibiotic can beat get rid of the bacteria |
Cardiac enzyme markers | Determines whether there is injury to the heart muscle |
Cerebrospinal fluid CSF | Looks for bacteria, fungi and viruses in the clear fluid that moves in the space surrounding the spinal cord |
Normal CSF should be what ? | Clear and colorless |
If CSF is bloody or red what can that indicate? | There could be bleeding or a spinal cord obstruction |
Brown, orange or yellow CSF indicates what ?? | Could indicate an infection |
Coagulation screen | Measures your blood ability to clot and the length of time it takes to clot |
Bleeding time | 1-9 minutes |
Thrombin time | 10-15 seconds |
Prothrombin time (PT) | 11-12.5 seconds (normal) or 1.5-2 ( with anticoagulant therapy) |
Partial Thromboplastin time (aPTT) | 30-40 seconds (normal) or 1.5-2.5 (with anticoagulant therapy) |
International Normalized ratio (INR) | 0.8-1.1 healthy people 2-3 (for A-fib) 3-4.5 (prosthetic valves) |
