Types of Energy
potential, kinetic, nuclear, chemical, fission, fusion, sound, electrical, therm
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| thermal energy | the vibration and movement of atoms and molecules within substances |
| fission | energy is released when the nucleus of the uranium atom is split |
| nuclear energy | energy stored in the nucleus of the atom |
| radiant energy | Energy that travels in transverse waves. An example would be solar energy. |
| sound energy | movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves. |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| chemical energy | stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules |
| potential energy | energy of position, shape, and stored |
| electrical energy | energy formed from the movement of electrons |
| fusion | energy is released when the nuclei of atoms are put together to form a larger atom |
| energy | the ability to do work |
| law of conservation of energy | energy cannot be created or destroy, it just changes form |
| renewable resource | can be replenished in a reasonable period of time |
| non-renewable resource | cannot be replenished in a resonable period of time |
| fossil fuels | remains of dead plants and animals from millions of years ago. examples are natural gas, petroleum, and coal |
| geothermal energy | energy from within the earth. an example is the gysers are Yellowstone National Park |
| biomass | remains of plants and animals that are recent. This is a renewable energy source |
| gravitational potential energy | energy due to the position of an object above the earth's surface |
