PS- Atoms
Atoms, Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Atom | smallest particle of an element that can be combined with other atoms for form a molecule |
Element | matter that cannot be changed into a simple form by any ordinary physical or chemical change |
Electron | a small negatively charged subatomic particle |
Proton | a small positively charged subatomic particle |
Neutron | a subatomic particle with the same mass as a proton but no electrical charge |
Atomic Number | number of protons an atom of an element contains |
Isotopes | atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons |
Atomic Mass Number | the number of protons and neutrons in an atom |
Synthetic Elements | elements that are not found in nature at all but are created in laboratories |
Compound | a substance made of 2 or more elements |
Ion | a charged particle formed when an atom or a group of atoms gains or loses one or more electron |
Cation | A positively charged ion (the atom lost an electron) |
Anion | a negatively charged ion (that atom gained an electron) |
Ionic Compounds | formed when a cation joins with an anoin |
Dalton's Model | all matter is made up of tiny individual particles; envisioned atoms as a sphere; atoms of each element are exactly alike but have different masses |
Thomson's Model | atoms not solid spheres, contained subatomic particles (electrons- do NOT move) |
Rutherford's Model | discovered protons and nucleus, electrons and protons evenly scattered throughought an atom; used gold sheet test |
Bohr's Model | defined locations of electrons, electrons must follow specific orbital patters called energy levels- planetary model |
Electron Cloud Model | electrons move about in an energy level with an ever changing pattern (blades of a fan) |
