TermDefinition
Psychiatrist A medical doctor(MD)- is the only mental health professional who can prescribe medication or perform surgery- normally take the biological approach ( to treat schizophrenia and depressive disorder
Clinical psychologists Have a doctoral degree (PhD or a PsyD)- includes a supervised internship and then a licensing exam- training includes different therapeutic approaches
Counseling psychologists Typically have one of -- (PhD, EdD, PsyD, or MA in counseling) deal with less severe mental health problems in college settings, or in marital or family practices. (try not to blame, provide a support ear- helps all parties clarify their feelings)
Psychoanalysts May or may not be psychiatrists, but follow the teachings of Freud
Clinical or psychiatric social workers Typically have earned a master's degree of a doctoral degree in social work(MSW or DSW)-- includes a supervised internship, and have passed a certification
Meta-analysis The systematic statistical method for synthesizing the results of numerous research studies dealing with the same variables
Insight therapies Goal is to help client develop insight about the cause of their problems, and that insight will lead to behavior change---problems will decrease as self-awareness increases
Psychoanalysis Freud believed that abnormal behavior was caused by unconscious childhood conflict.(experienced during the psychosexual stages)
free association when client says whatever comes to mind
manifest content recalled dream (surface meaning)
latent content underlying meaning
resistance blocking important issues or coming in late for sessions
transference when client responds to the analyst like another person in their life
catharsis the release of emotional tension after remembering or reliving emotional event from the past(resulting in a relief of anxiety
Psychodynamic and Interpersonal Psychotherapy Involves client sitting up and talking. Helps client more directly to gain insight on problems and work through feelings( although they feel that anxiety is rooted in past experiences, they do not necessarily assume the problem arose during childhood
Humanistic Therapies Client centered therapies. They think that problems arise because the clients goodness and their ability to grow have been stifled by external psychosocial constraints
