Drug Class_MOA

Drug Class and Corresponding Mech of Action

Drug classMechanism of action
antibiotics/ cephalosporins inhibits cell wall synthesis by acylation of transpeptidase
Narcotic Anagelsic interacts primarily w. opiate receptors by producing anagelsia
Antiepileptic phenytoin increases the extrusion of Na ions from neurons & cardiac myoctes, this produces a stabilization of the excitable membrane to repetitive stimuli
CV-Beta Blocker beta adrenergic blocking results in reduction in cardiac output, reduction in exercise &/ isoproterenol-induced tachycardia & reduces reflex orthostatic tachycardia
Anti-coagulants Warfarin antagonizes Vit K resulting in a decreased hepatic synthesis of the vit k dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX, & X)
CV-Angiotensin II Antagonist blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldolsterone secreting effects of Angiotensin II by binding by selectively blocking the BINDING of angiotensin II to ATI receptors in many tissues
Antidepressant inhibits neuronal serotonin uptake and norepinphrine reuptake
Antihistamines antagonize HI (histamine) receptors in peripheral tissues
Agent for Glaucoma inhibits carbonic anhydrase II in the ciliary processes of the eye by decreasimg aq. humor secretion by slowing the formation of bicarbonate ions with subsequent reduction in Na & fluid transport
Antihyperlipidimic competive inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase, reduces total cholesterol, LDL-C apo B and triglycerides & produces variable increases in HDL and apolipoprotein
Clindamycin binds to 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes & suppress protein synthesis
Diuretic inhibits the reabsorption of Na in exchange for K at the distal renal tubule, Hydrochlorothaizide also inhbits reabsorption of Na & Cl at the distal renal tubule
Diuretic Loop inhibits Na+/K+/2Cl- in the ascending portion of the loop of henle, increases the urinary excretion of Na, Cl & water but does not signfic. alter glomerular filt. rate, renal plasma flow or acid-base balance
Hormone/Estrogen promote growth and development of the vagina, uterus and fallopian tubes & enlargement of the breasts
Ovulatory/ Fertility agent Promotes secretion of LH, FSH and gonadotropins resulting in increased gametogenesis & steroidogenesis in the ovaries
Hormone/Progestin inhibits the secretion of gonadotropins wc in turn prevents follicular maturation & ovulation & results in endometrial thining
GI- Anticholinergic Inhbits the muscarinic action of acetycholine on smooth muscle.
Acne Agent binds to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors where it modulates cellular differentiation, keratinization and inflammation processes
CNS stimulant thought to block the uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine into the presynaptic neuron and increase release of these monoamines into the extraneuronal space
