Solutions
Question | Answer |
---|---|
dissociation | the breaking apart of an ionic compound (such as salt) into positive and negative ions when dissolved into water |
electrolyte | a substance that separates or forms in water solution, making the solution an electrical conductor |
ionization | the breaking apart of certain polar substances to form ions when dissolved in water |
nonelectrolyte | a substance, such as a pure water, that does not conduct electricity |
organic solvent | a type of liquid often found in building materials; contains potentially harmful chemicals |
saturated solution | a solution that has dissolved all the solute it can normally hold at a specific temperature |
solubility | the amount of substance (solvent) that will dissolve in a solvent |
solute | substance dissolved in a solvent |
solvent | substance that dissolves a solute |
supersaturated solution | an unstable solution that contains more solute than a saturated solution can at that same specific temperature |
unsaturated solution | a solution that is capable of dissolving more solute at a specific temperature |
solution | homogeneous mixture containing particles so tiny they cannot be seen even with a microscope; particles don’t settle and don’t scatter light |
