What is personality? An individual's characteristic patter of thinking, feeling, and acting
What is the Psychoanalysis theory? Our thoughts and actions are derived from unconscious motives
What are the psychoanalytic methods? Dream analysis, free association, Freudian slips, case studies
Where does personality come from? Arises from conflicts between aggressive/pleasure seeking impulses and internalized restraints against them. 1. id - pleasure principle - immediate gratification 2. superego - how we should behave 3. ego - reality principle - personality chief
What are the Psychosexual Stages? 1. Oral stage (0-18 months) 2. Anal stage (18-36 months) 3. Phallic stage (3-6 years) - Oedipus complex 4. Latency (6-puberty) 5. Genital stage (puberty)
Where does maladaptive behavior come from? Results from unresolved conflicts. - "Fixation"
What do defense mechanisms do? They reduce or redirect anxieties (Repression, projection, regression, etc.
What are the different tests used to assess the unconscious? TAT (Thematic Apperception Test); DAPT - Draw a Person Test ;Word assocation, complete the sentence; Rorschach inkblot test
What are the big five traits? 1. Emotional Stability - secure vs insecure 2. Extraversion - sociable vs retiring 3. Openness - independent vs conforming 4. Agreeableness - trusting vs suspicious 5. Conscientiousness - organized vs disorganized
What is the MMPI? Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory; Assesses abnormal personality traits ( depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviancy, paranoia, etc.)
What is the humanistic perspective? Focuses on the strivings of healthy people for self-determination and self-realization
What did Maslow and Carl Rogers believe? People are basically good and want to self-actualize
What is person centered therapy? a counseling approach that requires the client to take an active role in his or her treatment with the therapist being nondirective and supportive.
