Figurative Language

| Metaphor | A direct comparison of one thing as if it were another |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics to a nonhuman subject |
| Hyperbole | Over exaggeration |
| Idiom | A common phrase that sounds like it means one thing but it really means something else |
| Alliteration | The repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that suggest a sound |
| Oxymoron | Two opposite ideas are joined |
| Allusion | A brief, indirect reference to a person, place, thing, or idea of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance |
| Imagery | Figurative language used to appeal to the 5 senses |
| Symbolism | Using symbols to signify ideas or qualities |
| Understatement | Something is smaller, worse, or less important than it actually is |
