Terms and definitions for poetic forms and devices

Poetry imaginative writing that uses imagery and appeals to the senses; usually in non-paragraph form
Imagery the use of words to create sensory impressions
figurative language words that represent other things
hyperbole extreme exaggeration
simile comparison between two unlike things using like, as or resembles
personification giving human qualities to non-human or non-living objects
metaphor comparison between two unlike objects saying that one is the other; does not use like, as or resembles
extended metaphor a metaphor that is stated and the comparison is extended as far as the poet can take it
idiom words and phrases that have meaning other than their literal meaning
alliteration repetiion of iitial sounds
onomatopoeia the use of a word whose sound suggests its meaning
line a single unit in a poem; a word, phrase or sentenc
stanza a group of lines that express a thought; verse
refrain line or lines repeated at regular intervals; chorus
rhyme recurring identical or similar final word sounds within or at the ends of lines of verse
internal rhyme within one line of a poem
external rhyme at the end of lines of poetry
rhyme scheme or pattern the pattern of external rhyme within a poem; expressed by letters to indicate which lines rhyme
repetition repeated sounds words, phrases, lines or stanzas used for emphasis
couplet a pair of rhyming lines
quatrain containing four lines
tone the attitude the writer takes
mood the emotional atmosphere created by the author's use of language
theme a truth about life
free verse a poem that is free or regular rhyme or rhythm
closed poem follows strict, traditional patterns or rhythm, rhyme, number of syllables, etc
ballad a song-like narrative poem, usually featuring rhyme, rhythm and a refrain
concrete a poem shaped to look like its subjct
lyric a poem expressing personal thought or emotion
haiku a 17 syllable, delicate , unrhymed Japanese verse, usually about nature
limerick a humorous 5-line, rhythmic, rhymed poem with rhyme scheme AABBA
