Cells Tiny units that make up all living things
Organism A living thing
Metabolism The breaking down of food for energy
System Parts working together for a specific purpose
Mechanical Digestion The physical process of breaking down food into smaller molecules
Chemical Digestion The chemical breakdown of food by enzymes and acids
Enzymes Substances used to chemically breakdown food into smaller substances
Small intestine Organ in digestive system where food is broken down into the simplest molecules
Villi Structures in small intestine where nutrients are absorbed
Diffusion The movement of molecules from and area of greater concentration to lesser concentration
Osmosis The movement of water from an area of greater concentration to lesser concentration across a cell membrane
Cell Membrane A semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of the cell
Cytoplasm The water like material inside a cell
Plasma Clear portion of blood that carries nutrients and water
Pepsin Enzyme that is used to chemically breakdown protein
stomach Digestive organ with acidic environment where food is chemically and mechanically broken down
