What is the best way tocope with stressors? | It is very dependent on the situation. However, problem-focused coping and seeking social support are generally most effective. |
Problem-focused coping | Coping strategies that involve direct attempts to confront and master a stressful situation. |
Give an example of problem-focused coping. | Studying for a test. Going directly to another person to work out a misunderstanding. Signing up for a time management course to deal with time pressures. |
Emotion-focused coping | Coping strategies directed at minimizing or reducing emotional responses to a stressor. |
Give an example of emotion-focused coping. | Deny or pretend that nothing happened after a fallout with a friend. To deal with stress of an upcoming test, student goes out to a party to forget it. When informed of a terminal illness, patient accepts reality and that there is nothing to be done. |
Seeking social support | A class of coping strategies that involves turning to others for assistance and emotional support in times of stress. |
Give an example of seeking social support | Patient with terminal illness chooses to join a support group. Student seeks help in preparing for a stressful test. |

Self-medication | The use of unprescribed drugs to alleviate stress, anxiety, or other negative stress-induced emotions. |
What is the outcome of using alcohol to cure stress? | As a depressant, it lessens the emotional impact of stress --> promotes future self-medication because of its negative reinforcement --> leads to increasing alcohol consumption with all of the associated health risks. |
Self-injury | Also called self-harm; deliberately harming oneself without suicidal intention. |
What was Sloan and Marx's study? | Asked students who experienced traumatic life events to complete forms about their psychological symptoms and number of sick days. Half wrote about their experience, other half didn't. When later re-assessed, those who wrote about it showed less stress. |
