Types of Matter
Term | Definition |

Atom | The basic building block of most matter on Earth. |
Elements | A substance made up of one kind of atoms. ex. oxygen, hydrogen |
Compound | A substance made up of two or more elements. ex. Water |
Mixture | Matter that is made up of two or more substances that are not joined chemically. |
Solution | A mixture in which one substance dissolves in another substance. |
Dissolve | To mix evenly into another substance. |
Floatation | A method used to separate the parts of a mixture in which the part that is less dense floats to the top. |
Sifting | A method used to separate the parts of a mixture in which the smaller solid will fall through the holes in a sifter and the larger solid will stay inside the sifter. |
Filtration | A method used to separate the parts of a mixture in which the part that is a liquid will flow through a filter and the solid will remain in the filter. |
Evaporation | A method used to separate the parts of a solution in which the liquid turn to gas and disappears into the air. The solid, such as salt, will remain. |
