Vocabulary for English 3 Unit 1 Lesson 1
| Term | Definition |

| Repetition | Repeating words, phrases, or story elements to help people remember something |
| Alliteration | When the beginning sounds of words are repeated in a line of poetry or a sentence |
| Imagery | Used to describe things, events, or ideas using words related to our five senses (hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling, touching) |
| Metaphor | Comparing two unlike things without using a connecting word (such as "like" or "as") |
| Mood | The feelings that the reader has in response to the writing. Mood can be established through setting and diction (the words that the author chooses) |
| Point of View | The perspective from which a story is told. Perspective is another word for viewpoint. |
| First Person | The narrator in a story is a character in the story, and uses first person pronouns such as "I," "me," "we," and "us." |
| Second Person | The narrator directly addresses the reader, and uses second person pronouns such as "you" and "your." |
| Third Person | The narrator is outside the story and uses third person pronouns such as "he, she, it, they, them, theirs, his, hers, and its." |
| Symbol | Something, usually a physical object, that represents something else, such as an idea or quality (for example, love, honor, kindness, anger) |
| Symbolism | The use of symbols to express ideas or qualities in writing art, or music |
