Electricity
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Electric current | The flow of electric charges along a path |
Charging by conduction | involves the contact of a charged object to a neutral object. |
Induction charging | a method used to charge an object without actually touching the object to any other charged object |
Conductor | an object, substance or material allowing the flow of an electric charge |
Insulator | a material whose internal electric charges do not flow freely; very little electric current will flow through |
Electromagnet | type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of electric current. |
Generator | a device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy |
Motor | a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy |
electron | Negatively charged particles that are found outside the nucleus |
Proton | positively charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom |
Static electricity | The build up of electric charges on an object |
Circuit | A path along which electric charges can flow |
Open circuit | A circuit that has a break in its path, will not work |
closed circuit | A circuit that does not have a break in its path, will work |
grounding | a backup pathway that provides an alternating route for the current to flow back to the ground if there is a fault in the wiring system |
voltage | potential difference in charge between two points in an electrical field |
resistance | measure of the opposition to current flow in an electrical circuit |
Ohm's Law | describes the way current flows through a resistance when a different electric potential (voltage) is applied at each end of the resistance. |
Alternating Current | current where the flow of electric charge is constantly changing directions |
Direct current | the constant flow of electric charge in one direction |
Wet cell battery | cell (battery) that contains a liquid electrolyte |
Dry cell battery | a device made of one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. It contains an electrolyte that is contained within a paste or other moist medium. |
Circuit breaker | an automatic device for stopping the flow of current in an electric circuit as a safety measure |
Lightning | visible electrical discharge from a cloud |
Thunder | the sound made by a flash of lightning |
