Consumer Organism that feeds on other organisms in a food chain
Decomposer an organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances
Shredder organisms that eat the tissue of other organisms like wood or leaves
Dichotomous contrasting characteristics to divide the organisms in the key into smaller and smaller groups
Pest An organism that is considered a nuisance to man and animals which may cause illness or damage or consume food crops and other materials
Integrated pest management is a broad-based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests
Ecosystem a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Niche The function or position of a species within an ecological community
Biomes a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat
Biotic living organisms that interact with each other
Abiotic non-living components of the ecosystem that interact with the living
Homeostasis ability of the body or a cell to seek and a condition of stability within its environment when dealing with external changes
Environment as a branch of biology focused on the study of the relationships of the natural world and the relationships between organisms and their environments
Stream Order size and order of stream directly relates to the organisms that can be found in that habitat
Acid decosition A complex chemical and atmospheric situation that occurs when sulfur and nitrogen and other substances are transformed by chemical process
Topographic map A map that shows natural and man-made features
Watershed an area of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers or seas
Wetlands land consisting of marshes or swamps
Hydrology the branch of science with the properties of the earth's water
Groundwater water stored beneath the Earth's surface in rock
Mitigation impacts to an existing historic or natural resource such as a stream or wetland
Lentic Still water
Lotic Moving water
Collectors gather or filter food directly from the water
