| SIMILE | compares two things using LIKE or AS |
| METAPHOR | compares two things without using like or as; often says something is or was another |
| PERSONIFICATION | giving human characteristics to non human things |
| ONOMATOPOEIA | sound words that are pronounced as they sound |
| ALLITERATION | repeating consonant sounds in sentences or phrases |
| HYPERBOLE | extreme exaggerations |
| FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE | uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. |
| LITERAL LANGUAGE | the author is simply stating the facts as they are |
| IDIOM | word or phrase which means something different from its literal meaning |
| ALLUSION | a figure of speech that makes a reference to a place, person, or event. This can be real or imaginary and may refer to anything, including fiction, folklore, historical events, or religious manuscripts. |
| ASSONANCE | repetition of vowel sounds in phrases |
| OXYMORON | when two words are put together that have opposite meanings. |
| PUN | a corny, bad joke that plays with word meanings. |
| PROVERB | A figure of speech in which a bit of wisdom is given. They also often give advice or express truths. |
| UNDERSTATEMENT | an expression with less strength than expected. |
| IRONY | a common technique used by writers to create an outcome that is opposite from what was expected. |
