Argument Writing
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Hook | Opening sentences that introduce the topic and catch the reader's attention |
| Thesis | A sentence stating the main idea of the essay |
| Reasons | Statements that show why the author is correct, also known as claims |
| Evidence | Proof that supports the author's reasons |
| Counterargument | When the author predicts what the other side will say in order to prove them wrong or to address their concerns, also known as a counterclaim |
| Transition | A word or phrase that moves from one idea to the other and shows the relationship between ideas |
| Topic Sentence | A sentence expressing the main idea of a paragraph |
| Tone | The author's attitude towards the subject, which is shown through word choice |
| Concluding Statement | A sentence that wraps up the paragraph or essay in a memorable way |
| Ad hominem | Personally attacking the author instead of arguing against his or her ideas. Do not do this! |
