Argument Writing

TermDefinition
Hook Opening sentences that introduce the topic and catch the reader's attention
Thesis A sentence stating the main idea of the essay
Reasons Statements that show why the author is correct, also known as claims
Evidence Proof that supports the author's reasons
Counterargument When the author predicts what the other side will say in order to prove them wrong or to address their concerns, also known as a counterclaim
Transition A word or phrase that moves from one idea to the other and shows the relationship between ideas
Topic Sentence A sentence expressing the main idea of a paragraph
Tone The author's attitude towards the subject, which is shown through word choice
Concluding Statement A sentence that wraps up the paragraph or essay in a memorable way
Ad hominem Personally attacking the author instead of arguing against his or her ideas. Do not do this!
