GT Matter Vocabulary

Fourth Grade

States of Matter solid, liquid, gas
Solid atoms packed together; definite shape and volume
Liquid atoms move; changes shape
Gas atoms spread out and move freely
Matter something that takes up space and has observable properties
Property something that can be observed, described, or measured about an object
Physical Property characteristics that can be easily observed: color, texture, shape, size
Chemical Property characteristics that can only be observed when matter is changed to another form
Relative Density whether matter sinks or floats in water
Mass the amount of matter in a substance
Hypothesis a prediction or educated guess about the result of an experiment
Microscope a tool that allows you to observe very small objects
Solubility whether a substance dissolves in water
Volume how much space an object takes up
