| Analyze | to break apart and consider different aspects |
| evaluate | to make a judgement using the facts |
| metaphor | a comparison that does not use like or as; do not take it literally |
| understanding characters | consider how a character’s motivations, personality, change, and appearance contribute to the character |
| verb | an action, event, situation, change |
| voice | the author’s personality conveyed through the word choice, point of view, and style |
| text and graphic features | additional information in an informational text that is set apart from the main text |
| summarize | to retell |
| text structure | the way an author organizes the information in a non-fiction text (comparison, cause-effect, sequence order, problem-solution, description, etc.) |
| figurative language | a creative comparison that is not to be taken literally |
| direct objects | the noun that receives the verb |
| conclusions | to add up the facts and make an inference or educated guess |
| generalizations | making a broad statement |
| infer | to make an educate guess using your background knowledge and the text |
| predict | to guess what will happen in the future |
| connotation | the shades of meaning a word has; words might have the exact same meaning but there are positive and negative words for that meaning |
| character's motivations | why a character says or acts a certain way |
| coordinating conjunctions | and, but, or |
| cause and effect | an event happens which leads to another event |
| visualize | to picture what is happening in the text |
| style and tone | the author’s attitude toward the topic or what is happening |
| point of view | who is telling the story |
| first person | a character tells the story |
| third person | a narrator tells the story |
| subordinating conjunctions | conjunctions that introduce a subordinate clause (although, because, etc.) |
| compare and contrast | to consider similarities and differences between two or more things |
| arguments and claims | the view or opinion someone takes on a matter (claim – evidence to back it up) |
| author's purpose | the author’s reason for writing the text (Persuade/Inform/Entertain) |
