Figurative Language
Types of figurative definitions and examples.
| Term | Definition/Example |

| Metaphor | A direct comparison of two things. (It does not use LIKE or AS.) |
| Simile | A comparison of two things using the words LIKE or AS. |
| Alliteration | Repeated sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that sounds like the sound it names. |
| Idiom | A common saying with a meaning completely different from its dictionary meaning. |
| Personification | When an object is given human qualities. |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration. |
| Simile | He was as angry as a hornet defending its hive. |
| Metaphor | She is a bear when she wakes up in the morning. |
| Alliteration | Please plan to be present at Paul's pirate party. |
| Personification | The kite danced happily across the sky. |
| Onomatopoeia | The race car screeched to a halt. |
| Hyperbole | I've told you a million times not to wait until the last minute to study for a test! |
| Idiom | I'm exhausted! I think I will try to catch some Zs. |
| Simile | Kendra is as sweet as cotton candy. |
| Metaphor | My baby brother is my alarm clock each morning. |
| Alliteration | Harold had one huge headache by halftime. |
| Personification | When Mr. Abels sang the song, I couldn't take my eyes off his dancing mustache. |
| Onomatopoeia | The howling of wolves could be heard throughout the dark forest. |
| Hyperbole | We had to stand in line forever to ride the new roller coaster. |
| Idiom | Avoid Cindy this morning. She got up on the wrong side of the bed. |
