Atoms

TermDefinition
Atom basic unit of matter
Electron a subatomic particle that has a negative charge
Proton A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Nutron A subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus the positively charged dense center of an atom
Group the vertical columns on a periodic table - tell us number of valence electrons
Period the horizontal rows on a periodic table - tell us number of energy levels
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom - can also be used to find number of electrons in a neutral atom
Atomic Mass total mass of the protons and neutrons in an atom, measured in atomic mass units
Energy levels The rings around the nucleus of an atom where the electrons are - show the possible energies that an atom can have.
Ionic Bond When two atoms hold together by transferring valence electrons
Cation A positive Ion
Anion A negative Ion
ion An atom with an overall charge
