Atoms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | basic unit of matter |
| Electron | a subatomic particle that has a negative charge |
| Proton | A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Nutron | A subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Nucleus | the positively charged dense center of an atom |
| Group | the vertical columns on a periodic table - tell us number of valence electrons |
| Period | the horizontal rows on a periodic table - tell us number of energy levels |
| Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom - can also be used to find number of electrons in a neutral atom |
| Atomic Mass | total mass of the protons and neutrons in an atom, measured in atomic mass units |
| Energy levels | The rings around the nucleus of an atom where the electrons are - show the possible energies that an atom can have. |
| Ionic Bond | When two atoms hold together by transferring valence electrons |
| Cation | A positive Ion |
| Anion | A negative Ion |
| ion | An atom with an overall charge |
