| evaporation | process whereby the heat of the sun changes water on Earth's surface from a liquid to a gas |
| condensation | return of water vapor to liquid state by cooling |
| precipitation | liquid or solid water that falls from clouds to earth |
| transpiration | release of water vapor from plants' leaves into the air |
| runoff | precipitation (water) that runs off the land |
| groundwater | water stored beneath the Earth’s surface in rock |
| source | place where a stream or river begins |
| mouth | place where a stream or river ends, flowing into another body of water |
| velocity | the distance water flows during a given period of time (meters per second or feet per second, etc.) |
| bed load | sediment carried along the bottom of the stream channel |
| tributaries | feeder streams |
| topography | physical characteristics of the land |
| gradient | The rate at which a physical quantity, such as temperature or pressure changes over a distance. |
