TermDefinitions
Angina A severe, often constricting pain affecting the pectoris,or chest region, caused by lack of oxygen to the heart cells.
Arrhythmia Irregular rhythm of the heart.
Capillary Extremely small vessel that connects the ends of the smallest arteries (arterioles) to the smallest veins (venules), where exchanges of nutrients and wastes, O2 and CO2, occur; blood vessels at cellular level.
Coagulation To solidify or change from a fluid state to a solid state as in forming a blood clot.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Accumulation of blood in the circulatory system caused by the inability of the heart to pump efficiently.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) A common term used for several diseases that affect the heart.
Diuretic An agent that increases urine output and diuresis.
Enzyme A protein that speeds up a reaction by reducing the amount of energy required to initiate a reaction; also called a biological catalyst.
Hyperlipidemia Abnormally high concentration of lipids in the circulatory system.
Hypertension High blood pressure.
Hypotension Low blood pressure.
Myocardial infarction Death of the heart muscle.
Stroke Impaired cerebral blood flow caused by thrombosis, hemorrhage, or embolism.
Thrombin An enzyme that is formed in coagulating blood from prothrombin; this enzyme reacts with
Thrombolytic Medication used to break up a thrombus or blood clot.
Transient ischemic attack A temporary reduction of oxygen and blood in the brain.
Vein A vessel that carries deoxygenated blood to or toward the heart.
