This activity uses the notes for Unit 4 Lesson 1

QuestionAnswer
What is a fact? • A FACT is a statement that can be proven true or false
Can a fact change? Yes. Example: I am 67 years old. (fact) I am 68 years old on January 2. (fact)
Can all facts change? No. Example: I was born in 1950. (That is a fact, and will always remain the same.)
How can you tell if a statement is a fact? Question yourself: Can it be proven true or false?
How can you prove that a fact is true or false? Look on the Internet Look in books or ask someone knowledgeable.
What is an opinion? • An OPINION is a statement that cannot be proven true or false. • An OPINION is what a person thinks, believes, wants, or likes.
If an opinion has support from from facts, does that change it to a fact? No. People often use facts to support THEIR personal belief on the topic. That does not make their opinion "true".
How can I tell if a statement is an opinion? Look for "CLUE" words like these: think, believe, feel, best, worst, stupid, boring, exciting, Always, Never, None, Most, Least, Beautiful
Rabbits are mammals. Is that a fact or an opinion? Fact. You can prove this is true by looking it up
Rabbits are the best pets for young children. Fact or opinion? Opinion. Notice the "clue" word--best. No one can prove that a rabbit is the best pet.
Why do you need to learn the difference between a fact and opinion? When people try to persuade you to believe something, they will use a combination of facts and opinions to try to convince you.
How can a person mislead someone to believe their opinion? By using facts to support their opinion
