Chapter 10: Mitosis

Cell Division A process by which a cell divides into two new daughter cells
Chromatid One of two identical "sister" parts of a duplicated chromosome
Centromere A region of a chromosome where the two chromatids attach
Interphase The period of the cell cycle between cell division
Cell Cycle A series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells
Mitosis Part of eukarote cell division during which the cell nucleus divides
Prophase The first and longest phase of mitosis in which the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and the chromosomes become visible
Centrioles The structure in an animal cell that helps organize cell division
Spindle The fan-like structures that separate the chromosomes
Metaphase The phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up in the center of the cell
Anaphase The phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase The phase of mitosis in which the distinct individual chromosomes begin to spread out into a tangle of chromatin
Cytokinesis The division of cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells
Cyclin One of a family of proteins that regulates the cell cycle in eukaryote cells
Cancer A disorder in which some of the body's cells lose the ability to control growth
