TermDefinition
Word Processing A software used to create, edit, and print text documents. It also has features that make it easy to add graphics to text. Word Processing software can be used to create letters, memos, flyers, essays, reports, books, newsletters, brochures, and Web pages
Double Spacing One blank line is in between your text lines (1.0)
Italicize Slants your text
New Word command allowing you to create a blank document.
Print/Print Review Word command allowing you to produce copies of documents on paper
Clipboard Clips text onto the clipboard to later be used.
Font Color Change the color of your text
Superscript Type very small letters just below the line of text
Bold Makes your text darker
Sort/Ascending and Descending Sorts list in alphabetical order or the opposite of alphabetical order.
Center Alignment Align your content in the middle of the document
Shading Changes the color behind the selected text, paragraph, or table cell.
Find/Replace Finds a word in your document and replaces it with another word.
Cover Page Inserts a fully formatted cover page.
Online Pictures/Word Art Inserts an image into your document.
Hyperlink Inserts a link into your document for quick access to webpages and files
Text Box Inserts text boxes into a document.
Margins Amount of space at the top, bottom, right and left of your document. Default setting is 1" on each side.
Portrait The page is oriented vertically.
Page Color Chooses a color for the background of the page.
Thesaures Suggests other words with similar meaning to the word you have selected
Default (font and font size) Preset or programmed setting, This is automatic unless you change it. Word default font and font size is Calibri (Body) at 11
Save/Save As Save: A command to save any changes to your document. Save As: A command to rename a document at the same time as you moving it to a new location
Open Opens a document
Close Saves a document
Font Type style of text
Change Case Change the selected text to uppercase, lowercase, or other common capitalization
Suscript Type very small letters just below the line of the text
Bullets A symbol used to separate a list
Show/Hide Shows paragraph marks and other hidden formatting symbols such as spaces and tabs
Justified Align your content to both the left and right margins.
Boarders Adds lines around text or pictures
Select All Selects entire document for formatting changes
Blank Page Inserts a blank page anywhere in your document
Shapes/ Smart Art SmartArt: Insert a SmartArt graphic to “visually” communicate information (Ex. Cycle, pyramid, organization chart) Shapes: Inserts ready-made shapes, such as circles, squares, and arrows.
Headers/Footers Heading: Inserts information at the top of your document. Footer: Inserts information at the bottom of your document
Page Orientation Switches between portrait (vertical) layout and landscape (horizontal) layout.
Columns Splits text and documents into two or more columns
Envelopes Creates and prints envelopes
Labels Creates and prints labels
Undo/Redo Can undo or redo what you just did.
Single Spacing No blank lines are in between your text lines
Underline Inserts a line underneath your text (underline)
Word Wrap In a text document, this feature automatically moves to the next line when text hits the right margin. The only time you strike the enter key is when you are inserting a blank line
Increase Font Make your text a little bit bigger
Decrease Font Make your text a little bit smaller
Font Size Size of text (default is 11)
Highlight Make your text pop by highlighting it in a bright color
Strikethrough Crosses something out by drawing a line through it
Numbering Automatically starts a numbered list
Left Alignment Align your content with the left margin
Right Alignment Align your content with the right margin
Page Boarders Puts a creative border around your page.
Table/Rows/Columns Columns: Splits text and document
Page Break Ends the current page and inserts a new page
Charts Insert a chart to illustrate and compare data
Page Numbers Numbers the page in the header or footer.
Symbols Inserts ready-made shapes, such as circles, squares, and arrows.
Landscape The page is oriented horizontally.
Watermark Inserts "ghosted" text behind the content of the page. The faint watermark is a great way to show that the document requires special treatment without distracting from the content.
Spelling/Grammar Check Checks the spelling and grammar of the text
Zoom Opens the zoom dialog box to specify the zoom level of the document. Also note the shortcut in the right corner of the screen.
Cut Removes data from one area, stores it in the clip board, ready to be placed to a different location
Copy Duplicates data from one area, stores it in the clip board, ready to be placed to a different location
Paste Places copied or cut text or graphics to a different location
