Expository

Writing

TermDefinition
Expository Writing The purpose is to explain and inform the reader about our thinking or beliefs.
thesis statement The central idea of your essay.
conclusion Restates your thesis and reasons and sometimes adds a spin.
topic sentence The first sentence of a new paragraph that states your reason for that paragraph.
transitions Help your paper flow or move to the next idea.
supporting evidence The facts, opinions, or short stories that support or prove the topic sentence in each paragraph.
Narrative Writing The purpose is to entertain a reader with a story.
fact Something you can prove
opinion Your personal belief about something
paragraph A section of a piece of writing, usually dealing with a single theme
