Text Features

TermDefinition
Table of Contents This gives the heading and beginning page of each section of the book.
Map It is a picture that shows the location of something.
Bold Print It calls attention to new and important words.
Illustration This is a hand-drawn picture that helps the reader visualize the text.
Graph It shows information in a visual way so that it can be understood by readers.
Diagram It is a drawing that shows the parts of something.
Photograph It is a picture made with a camera that shows how things look in real life.
Italic Print This is the slanted text that identifies new or important words.
Index This list words alphabetically and often gives the page numbers where the words occur in the text.
Heading This tells the reader what the section of the reading is about.
Glossary This alpahbetically lists new or important words and tells what they mean.
Caption These are the words next to a picture that explain what it is or is about.
