Elements of Plot

TermDefinition
exposition the introduction or beginning of a story
rising action the events that introduce the problem, reveal conflict, and lead to the most exciting part
climax the most exciting part in a story, or the turning point
falling action events that tie up loose ends and lead to the problem being solved
resolution the end of the story where the problem is solved and questions are answered
conflict the problem of the story
external conflict a problem between the character and another character, society, or nature
internal conflict a problem where the character must grapple with a personal decision or struggle (heart & mind)
man vs. man a character is in conflict with another character
man vs. nature a character is in conflict with sickness, a storm or the elements, or an animal
man vs. society a character is in conflict with rules, expectations, or laws of his or her community
man vs. self a character is in conflict with a personal tough decision or choice that must be made
