Elements of Plot
| Term | Definition |

| exposition | the introduction or beginning of a story |
| rising action | the events that introduce the problem, reveal conflict, and lead to the most exciting part |
| climax | the most exciting part in a story, or the turning point |
| falling action | events that tie up loose ends and lead to the problem being solved |
| resolution | the end of the story where the problem is solved and questions are answered |
| conflict | the problem of the story |
| external conflict | a problem between the character and another character, society, or nature |
| internal conflict | a problem where the character must grapple with a personal decision or struggle (heart & mind) |
| man vs. man | a character is in conflict with another character |
| man vs. nature | a character is in conflict with sickness, a storm or the elements, or an animal |
| man vs. society | a character is in conflict with rules, expectations, or laws of his or her community |
| man vs. self | a character is in conflict with a personal tough decision or choice that must be made |
