Energy Types

Energy The ability to do work or cause a change
The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed or changed from one form to another.
Kinetic Energy energy an object has due to its motion Two factors that effect is mass and speed Examples: Roller Coaster, Car, Moving Water
Potential Energy energy stored in an object due to its position Two factors that effect is mass and position (height) Examples: Roller Coaster at the top of a hill, resting bird, a parked bicycle
Thermal Energy energy that all objects have; increases as the object’s temperature increases Examples: Hot Chocolate, Hot water in a tea kettle, fire
Chemical Energy energy that is stored in chemicals Examples: Batteries, Food, Photosynthesis, Muscles
Radiant Energy energy of light or radiation Examples: The Sun, Xrays, Microwaves, Flashlights
Electrical Energy energy carried by electric current that comes out of batteries and wall sockets, is generated at large power plants, and is readily transformed into other types of energy Examples: Anything that plugs into a wall socket, refrigerator, electric car
Nuclear Energy energy stored in atomic nuclei that can be transformed into other forms of energy by complex power plants Examples: Power Plant, Atomic Bomb
Mechanical Energy energy from moving parts Examples: Car, Robot Dog, Fishing Reel
Sound Energy energy that produces sound Examples: Radio, Juke Box, Music Box
