Adaptations

TermDefinition
Hibernation to become inactive in winter for the purpose of conserving energy until more food becomes available again
Migration to move from one place to another place, periodically or seasonally
Variation A difference in traits between organisms of the same species
Phloem An internal structural adaptation of a plant which carries sugar from leaves throughout the plant (glucose)
Xylem An internal structural adaptation of a plant which carries water from the roots and distributes it throughout the plant
Adaptation characteristics or features that increase an organism’s ability to survive within a changing environment
external stimuli A stimulus that comes from outside of an organism, either from the environment or another organism
Internal stimuli A stimulus that comes from inside an organism’s body
Physiological the adaptation that allows an organism to control metabolic functions, such as temperature regulation, in order to cope with the environmental factors
Species A group of organisms with similar traits that are capable of mating with one another
