| Term | Definition |

| Hibernation | to become inactive in winter for the purpose of conserving energy until more food becomes available again |
| Migration | to move from one place to another place, periodically or seasonally |
| Variation | A difference in traits between organisms of the same species |
| Phloem | An internal structural adaptation of a plant which carries sugar from leaves throughout the plant (glucose) |
| Xylem | An internal structural adaptation of a plant which carries water from the roots and distributes it throughout the plant |
| Adaptation | characteristics or features that increase an organism’s ability to survive within a changing environment |
| external stimuli | A stimulus that comes from outside of an organism, either from the environment or another organism |
| Internal stimuli | A stimulus that comes from inside an organism’s body |
| Physiological | the adaptation that allows an organism to control metabolic functions, such as temperature regulation, in order to cope with the environmental factors |
| Species | A group of organisms with similar traits that are capable of mating with one another |
