Drug Classifications

Names and Desciptions

analgesic Relieves pain without the loss of consciousness.
anastheic Produces a lack of feeling which may be of local or general effect depending on the type of administration.
antibiotic Destroys or prohibits the growth of microorganisms.
anticoagulant Prevents or delays blood clotting.
anticonvulsant Prevents or relieves convulsions.
antidote Counteracts the effects of poisons.
antiemetic Controls nausea and vomiting.
antihistamine Counteracts histamine and contros allergic reactions.
antipruritics Relieves itching.
antipyretic Reduces fever.
antitussive Controls or relieves coughing.
bronchodilator Dilates or opens the bronchi (airways in the lungs) to improve breathing.
decongestant Reduces nasal congestion and swelling
diuretic Increases the excretion of urine which Promotes the loss of water and salt from the body.
expectorant Assists in the removal of secretions from the bronchopulmonary membranes.
hypnotic Produces sleep or hypnosis.
miotic Constricts the pupils of the eye.
mydriatic Dilates the pupils of the eye.
narcotic Produces sleep or stupor.
sedative Produces relaxation without causing sleep.
tranquilizer Used to reduce mental anxiety and tensions.
vasodilator Produces a relaxation of blood vessels to lower blood pressure.
vasopressor Produces the contration of muscles in the capillaries and arteries which elevated the blood pressure.
