Mod B Unit 2-Drugs

Classifications and Descriptions

QuestionAnswer
Relieves pain without the loss of consciousness. These may be either natcotic or non-narcotic. Narcotic drugs are derived from the opium poppy and act upon the brain to cause pain relief and drowsiness. For Example: Morphine Analgesic
Produces lack of feeling which may be of local or general effect depending on the type of administration. Anesthetic
Destroys or prohibits the growth of microorganisms. These are used to treat bacterial infection. They have not been found to be effective in treating viral infections. Must be taken regularly for a specified time period to be effective. Antibiotic
Prevents or delays blood clotting. Also referred to as blood thinners. Anticoagulant
Prevents or relieves convulsions. Drugs such as phenbarbital reduce excessive stimulation in the brain to control seizures and other symptoms or epilepsy. anticonvulsant
Counteracts the effects of poisons Antidote
Counteracts histamine and controls allergic reactions. Antihistamine
Controls nausea and vomiting.These generally act upon the vomiting center in the brain. Antiemetic
Relieves itching Antipruritics
Reduces Fever. Antipyretic
Controls or relieves coughing. Codeine is an ingredient in many prescription cough medicines. It acts upon the brain to control coughing. Antitussive
Dilates or opens the bronchi(airways in the lungs) to improve breathing. Bronchodilator
Reduces nasal congestion and swelling Decongestant
Assists in the removal of secretions from the bronchopulmonary membranes Expectorant
Produces sleep or hypnosis. Hypnotic
Constricts the pupils of the eye. Miotic
Dilates the pupils of the eye. Mydriatic
Produces sleep or stupor. (addictive) Narcotic
Produces relaxation without causing sleep Sedative
Used to reduce mental anxiety and tensions. tranquilizers
Produces relaxation of blood vessels or lower blood pressure. Vasodilator
Produces a contraction of muscles in the capillaries and arteries which elevates the blood pressure. Vasopressor
