Energy Vocabulary for 8th Grade Science

| energy efficiency | Percentage of energy put into a system that does useful work; energy not lost to the environment |
| energy distribution | how much energy is produced by each source |
| biomass | energy from living materials; wood, biofuels, etc. |
| sustainable | able to continue indefinitely |
| energy conservation | The practice of reducing energy use |
| biofuel | Fuels, such as ethanol or methanol, that are created from the fermentation of plants or plant products. |
| fossil fuels | Energy from ancient plants and animals; stored as coal, oil, natural gas, peat, etc. |
| geothermal energy | energy captured from the earth's heat energy |
| hydroelectric energy | energy captured from water movement/flow |
| wind energy | energy captured from air movement |
| photovoltaic cells | Cells in solar energy that convert energy from the sun directly into electricity |
| solar energy | energy from the sun |
| nuclear energy | energy captured from the fission (splitting) or fusion (putting together) of atoms |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed |
| energy conversion | the process of changing energy from one form to another |
| energy transfer | Movement of energy from one place or object to another |
| chemical energy | Energy stored in chemical bonds |
| thermal energy | Heat energy |
| potential energy | Stored Energy |
| kinetic energy | Energy of motion |
| nonrenewable | a resource that cannot be replaced faster than it is used |
| alternative energy | energy from renewable sources that do not continuously harm the environment |
| radiant energy | energy carried by light |
| mechanical energy | Kinetic & potential energy associated with the motion & position of an object |
| renewable | resource that can be replaced at the same or greater rate than it is consumed |
| depletion | all of a resource is used |
| carbon footprint | measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced |
