Chemistry the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
Physics the study of matter, energy, motion and forces, and how they interact
Scientific Inquiry the different ways scientist study the natural world.
Processes of Scientific Inquiry posing questions, developing hypotheses, designing experiments, collecting data, interpreting data, drawing conclusions and communicating ideas and results
hypothesis a possible answer to a scientific question or explanation for a set of observations
parameter a factor that can be measured in an experiment
manipulated variable the variable in an experiment that is changed on purpose
responding variable the variable parameter that is expected to change because of the manipulated variable
controlled experiment an investigation in which only one parameter is manipulated at a time
data the facts, figures and other evidence gather through observations.
communicating sharing ideas and conclusions with others through writing and speaking
model a picture, diagram computer image or other representation of an object or process
scientific theory well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results
scientific law statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions
SI Internation System of Units; an expanded metric system used by scientists
meter basic unit of length in SI
weight the measure of the force of gravity on you.
newtons or pounds weight units
mass the measure of the amount of matter an object contains
kilogram basic unit of mass in SI
volume the amount of space an object takes up
cubic meter basic unit of volume in SI
meniscus the curve of the top surface of water
density mass per unit volume
density formula density = mass/volume
kilogram per cubic meter kg/m cubed basic unit of mass in SI
second basic unit of time in SI
Celcius Scale temperature scale where water freezes at 0 degrees; water boils at 100 degrees
Kelvin Scale another temperature scale
kelvin basic unit of temperature in SI
absolute zero the temperature 0 K on the Kelvin scale
