state of mater any of the four physical forms of matter
solid state of matter with a definite shape and volume
liquid state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape
gas state of matter that has no definite shape of volume
physical change change that does not produce a new substance
chemical change change that produces new substances

melting change from a solid to a liquid
evaporation change from a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid
condesation change from a gas to a liquid
sublimation change from a solid directly to a gas
deposition change from a gas directly to a solid
displacement method a procedure used to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object by placing it in a known amount of water
density a physical property relating the amount of matter in a substance to the volume of the substance
relative density the comparison of one material as it relates to another (usually water)
density formula density = mass/volume (d=m/v)
mass the amount of matter in an object
volume the amount of space an object takes up

neutron particle that has no charge and a mass of 1 amu
electron particle that has a negative charge and an extremely small mass
atomic number number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
atomic mass average mass of all of the isotopes of an element
mass number number of protons and neutrons in an atom
energy level place in electron cloud where an electron is most like to be found
isotope atom of an element with the same number of protons as the other atoms but a different number of neutrons
chemical symbol shortened way of writing the name of an element
periodic repeating pattern
group vertical column of elements in the periodic table
period horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
metal element that has the properties of shiny, luster, ductility, and malleablity
malleable able to be hammered into different shapes
ductile able to be drawn into thin wires

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
