TYPE 1 DM -caused by autoimmune destruction of the beta cells -beta needs insulin -insulin therapy -diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar non-ketonic syndrome
TYPE 2 DM -caused by insulin deficiency; insulin resistance -most common type (90%) -GOLD - metformin -lifestyle change, weight loss, no smoking, decrease alcohol, exercise, oral drug therapy, insulin
DIABETES MELLITUS complex disorder that affects carbohydrate, protein & fat metabolism (6th leading cause of death in the U.S.)
GESTATIONAL DIABETES -women who show abnormal glucose tolerance during pregnancy -7% of all women -subsides after delivery
blood glucose of 224 = 9U
blood glucose of 88 = zero, none
blood glucose of 350 = 12U
blood glucose of 157 = 7U
