Consciousness
| Term | Definition |

| Consciousness | awareness of one's self and one's environment |
| Controlled Processing | we are aware of what we are doing |
| Automatic Processing | performing tasks mechanically |
| Sensory Awareness | aware of sensations and stimuli around you (more consciousness of some things than others) |
| Direct Inner Awareness | Thoughts, images, emotions, and memories/things inside yourself. |
| Sense of Self | Aware of ourselves and our existence |
| Preconscious | Information that is not conscious, but it's retrievable into conscious awareness. |
| Unconscious | Freud: Reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories of which we are unaware but which influences our behavior. |
| Nonconscious | Bodily processes of which we are not aware. |
