MELTS

Mechanical, Electrical, Light, Thermal and Sound Energy

TermDefinition
ENERGY What is needed to do work or cause change
MECHANICAL ENERGY Energy used to produced by a machine, moving parts or gears
ELECTRICAL ENERGY Energy used to produce by the movement of electrons or charged particles
LIGHT ENERGY Radiant energy that our eyes can see from the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum
THERMAL ENERGY Energy used that causes a transfer of heat, temperature or transfer heat between materials
SOUND ENERGY Energy used that is produced from vibration that you can hear
POTENTIAL ENERGY The energy an object has because of it's position or condition
KINETIC ENERGY The energy an object has because of it's motion
CHEMICAL ENERGY Energy that is stored in matter and that can be released by a chemical reaction. Example: Food
TEMPERATURE A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
RADIATION Heat from Earth that radiates or transferred outward to space
CONVECTION The transfer of energy by currents in a liquid or gas
SOLAR RADIATION The sun's energy that reaches Earth by radiation
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY Earth heat that is transformed into electrical energy
COMBUSTION Thermal Energy is used to process products such as food, plastic and metal
STATIC ELECTRICITY Electric charges that build up and are not moving. Opposite electrical charges attract to each other.
ELECTRIC CURRENT The flow of charged particles over a wire path or conductor
CONDUCTORS Wires made of metals, such as copper which allow electricity to travel through them
INSULATORS Materials such as plastic, rubber or glass that prevent the flow of electricity. Other materials include; concrete and wood.
CIRCUIT A complete pathway made of conductors through which electric currents can flow
SERIES CURCUIT An electric current that has ONLY one path to follow to and from the energy source
PARALLEL CIRCUIT A circuit that contains two or more paths for electric current to follow
PARTS OF A CIRCUIT BATTERY, SWITCH, LOAD AND WIRE (conductor) and INSULATORS (plastic covering over wire)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
