Electromagnet Vocab

TermDefinition
Electromagnet A temporary magnet whose magnetic field is produced by an electric current.
Solenoid A copper coil with an iron core that moves when an electric current moves through the copper coil.
Electric motor A device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Electric generator A device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Permanent magnet A piece of metal that has a permanent magnetic field. These are the everyday magnets that you think of when you heard the word magnet.
Temporary magnet A material that is magnetic when exposed to a magnetic field.
Magnetic field An area where magnetic force can be detected
Conductive charging Moving an electric charge through pieces of metal that are touching
Inductive charging Moving an electric charge through 2 items that are close but not touching
Step-up transformer An piece of equipment that increases voltage and decreases current
Step-down transformer A piece of equipment that decreases voltage and increases current
AC current Electric current that alternates direction (house electricity)
DC current Electric current that travels only in one direction (battery electricity)
