| Capital | money used for investment |
| Yeoman | southern owner of a small farm who did not have slaves |
| Tenant Farmer | farmer who works on land owned by another and pays rent in either money or crops |
| Fixed Cost | regular expenses such as housing or maintaining equipment that remains about the same year after year |
| Cedit | a form of a loan; ability to buy goods based on future payment |
| Overseer | person who supervises a large operation or its workers |
| Spititual | an African American religious folk song |
| Slave Code | the laws passed in the Southern States that controlled and restricted slaves |
| Nat Turner | in 1831, led an unsuccessful slave revolt in Virginia. At least 55 white people were killed; slave rebels were executed |
| Harriet Tubman | former slave who led hundreds of fellow slaves to freedom through the underground railroad |
| Frederick Douglass | former slave; spoke out against slavery |
| Underground Railroad | a system that helped enslaved African Americans follow a network of escape routes out of the South to freedom in the North and Canada |
