| Clipper Ship | a fast sailing ship with slender lines, tall masts, and large square sails |
| Telegraph | a device or system that uses electrical signals to transmit messages by a code over wires |
| Morse Code | a system for transmitting messages that uses a series of dots and dashes to represent the alphabet, numbers, and punctuation |
| Elias Howe | invented the sewing machine |
| John Deere | invented the steel-tipped plow |
| Cyrus McCormick | designed and constructed a mechanical reaper |
| Trade Union | organizations of workers with the same trade or skill. They often organized to win better conditions or pay for workers |
| Strike | refusal to work in order to put pressure on employers until their demands for better pay or conditions are met |
| Prejudice | unfair opinion of someone that is not based on fact |
| Discrimination | unfair treatment of a group; unequal treatment because of a person's race, religion, ethnic background or place of birth |
| Famine | an extreme shortage of food |
| Nativist | A person who favors those born in his or her own country and is opposed to immigrants |
| Know-Nothing Party | a secret, anti-Catholic society formed in 1850. Formed mainly by nativist's who discriminated against immigrants |
