| atom | one of the smallest possible pieces or units of matter that has all the properties of that substance. |
| compound | a kind of matter made if two or more elements are combined. |
| density | the amount of matter in a given volume (D=M/V or Density = Mass divided by Volume). |
| element | a kind of matter that cannot be broken down into another kind of matter. |
| experiment | a test to answer a question or solve a problem. |
| gas | a state of matter that takes the shape and volume of its container. No definite shape or volume. |
| liquid | a state of matter in which the substance has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. |
| mass | the amount of matter an in a substance or object. |
| matter | everything you can see or touch. Anything that has mass and takes up space. The material all things are made of. |
| property | a characteristic that describes an object. Examples: color, size, shape, texture, weight, density, volume, taste, smell, elasticity, shiny, dull, type, composition (what it is made of metal, rubber, wood). |
| solid | a state of matter that has a definite shape and volume. |
| volume | the amount of space an object or substance takes up. |
