Chapter 4 - Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic energy | a form of energy in motion; (kinetic energy = 1/2 kilograms X velocity squared (v²) |
| Potential energy | energy stored in a positioned object giving it the potential to cause change |
| GPE (gravitational potential energy) | energy that is stored by things that are above the Earth's surface (GPE = mass in kilograms X 9.8m² X height in joules |
| Elastic potential energy | energy that is stored by things that stretch |
| Chemical potential energy | energy that is stored in chemical bonds between atoms |
| Mechanical energy | the total amount of kinetic, and potential energy in an object |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | energy may change from one form to another - the amount of energy never changes as a result of the change - it neither loses or gains energy |
