visual organization and interepretation
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| figure ground perception | perception of figures against a background |
| ex of figure ground perception | famous vase, angel picture |
| proximity | tendency to group together visual and auditory events that are near each other |
| ex of proximity | grouping close lines together, a dog bark and a yell coming from the same direction could be asssumed to be associated |
| similarity | tendency to group togehter elements that seem alike |
| ex of similarity | big circle/square small circle/square picture, rows of circles and squares vertically |
| symmetry | the tendency to see a mirror or balanced image |
| ex of symmetry | a breadstick, head cushion (can be cut in half perfectly) |
| continuity | tendency to group stimuli into continuous patterns |
| ex of continuity | ㅅ--more likely to group the two long lines rather than the two stunted lines |
| closure | tendency to perceive a complete or whole figure even when there are gaps in what your senses tell you |
| common fate | tendency to perceive objects that are moving together as being together |
| law of pragnanz | minimum tendency to see objects in simplest form |
| depth perception | the ability to detect how far away something is |
| binocular cues | factors using both eyes |
| retinal disparity | the difference between 2 images. the greater the difference between the images, the closer an object is. |
| steroscopic vision convergence | eyes turn inward to focus on nearby objects; detect mvmt |
| monocular cues | factors using only one eye |
| relative height | we perceive objects higher in our field of vision as farther away. lower parts are closer. |
| texture gradient | we can see the definite texture in closer objects, but in far away objects, the texture seems more smooth |
| interposition | if an object partially blocks our view of another, we perceive it as closer |
| ex of interposition | a giraffe blocking the view of a tree--we would perceive the giraffe as closer |
| linear perspective | parallel lines appear to meet in the distance |
| ex of linear perspective | 7th grade art project in ryan |
| aerial perspective | atomspheric moisture and dust obscure farther objects more than closer ones. |
| motion parallax/relative motion | as we move, obhects that are stable appear to move. objects beyond the fixation pt. will move with you, and objects in front of the pt. will move backward. |
| light and shadow | shading produces a sense of depth consistent with our assumption that light comes from above. |
| motion detection | the ability to perceive mvmt, real or imagined |
| autokinetic illusion | still light appears to move in darkness because of no reference point. |
| ex of autokinetic illusion | shining a white light against a blank wall in darkness makes the light look like it's moving |
| stroboscopic motion | the brain perceives continuous mvmt in a rapid series of slightly varying images (flip picture book) |
| phi phenomenon | an illusion of mbmt created when 2 or more lights blink on/poff quickly (6th grade light system) |
| perceptual constancy | perceiving objects as unchnaging (having consistent shapes, sizes, color) even as illumination and retinal images change. |
| perceptual adaption | (vision) the ability to adjust to an artifically displaced or inverted visual field. |
