Basic language devices

TermDefinition
Alliteration Repetition of first letter sounds = Silly Sausage
Onomatopoeia words which imitate sound. = BANG
Repetition The purposeful re-use of words . = AGAIN AGAIN I SAY!
Rhyme words with matching end sounds. = Cat Mat
Rhythm The pace or beat of the poem = fast slow
Imagery Words that create an image/ picture
Simile A comparison: two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'.
Metaphor A comparison: saying something is something else
Personification Giving human qualities to animals or things = the tree danced
Symbolism A word, phrase or image which stands for something. =Dove for peace
Emotive language Words and phrases that make you feel.
