Plot, characterization, and conflict terms

TermDefinition
climax turning point or most suspenseful part of the story
motivation reason or force that causes a character to behave in a certain way
direct characterization the author tells the audience directly about the character
dialogue words that the characters speak aloud
setting the time and place of the story
static character character does not change over the course of the story
antagonist a person who is actively opposing or in conflict with the main character
plot sequence of events in a story; development of the central conflict
inference judgment or conclusion based on what the author has implied
internal conflict conflict or problem inside a character
resolution conclusion of the story or conflict
exposition beginning of a story where characters and setting are introduced
central conflict main problem within the story
protagonist the main character; hero or heroine in a literary work
rising action complications or events leading up to the climax
indirect characterization the author gives the audience clues about the character through what a character says, thinks, and does and through how other characters respond to him/her
dynamic character changes over the course of the story; usually one of the main characters
falling action occurs after climax; loose ends are tied up
external conflict conflict or problem that is outside of the characters
initiating event central or main conflict of the story is introduced
