JCMS Energy vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
chemical energy Potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold the compounds of a substance together.
energy The ability to cause change or do work, such as moving an object some distance.
elastic potential energy Potential energy in objects that are stretched or compressed.
gravitational potential energy Potential energy due to an object’s position or height above the Earth’s surface.
kinetic energy Energy of motion.
potential energy Energy that is stored waiting to be released, due to an objects position or composition.
Pulley A simple machine consisting of a grooved wheel with a rope, chain or cable wrapped around it.
Resistance A force that opposes motion. (load)
Simple machine A device that makes effort seem easier by changing the amount, the direction, or the distance over which the force is exerted.
Wedge A simple machine consisting of a device that is thick at one end and tapers to a thin edge at the other edge.
Wheel and axle A simple machine in which a circular object (wheel) rotates around a central axis (axle).
Work Force used to move an object.
