| element | substance that cannot be broken down or separated into simpler substances by chemical means |
| atom | smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
| molecule | group of atoms held together by chemical forces |
| compound | substance made up of atoms of 2 or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| pure substance | matter sample that is either a single element or single compound has definite chemical and physical properties |
| mixture | combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| melting point | temperature and pressure at which a solid becomes a liquid |
| boiling point | temperature and pressure at which a liquid becomes a gas |
| density | ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
| reactivity | the capacity of a substance to combine chemically with another substance |
| physical change | change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical property |
| chemical change | change that occurs when 1 or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
