Literary terms YOU need to know!!!

TermDefinition
Nonfiction A text that is true.
Autobiography A narrative about a person's life written by that person.
Biography A narrative about a person's life written by someone else.
Memoir A narrative about a memory written by that person.
Poetry Figurative writing (in the form of VERSE)
Figurative Language Language that appeals to the imagination.
Literal Language Straightforward language that means what it says.
Denotation The dictionary definition of a word.
Connotation Positive or negative suggested meaning of a word.
Diction The author's choice of words.
Mood The feelings created in a reader by a text.
Tone The author's attitude toward a text.
Speaker/ Point of View The perspective from which the poem is told.
Simile A comparison using "like" or "as".
Metaphor A comparison that DOES NOT use "like" or "as".
Personification Giving human qualities to something that is not human.
Onamatopoeia Words that make the same sound as their name.
Oxymoron Combining two contradictory words to form a new one with a separate meaning.
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration.
Alliteration Words that begin with the same sound/ letter.
Allusion A reference to literature, history, pop culture, etc...
Symbolism An object or color used to represent something else
Idiom An expression in which the words have a figurative, NOT literal meaning.
Euphemism Substituting an inoffensive/ vague word or expression for a course one.
Imagery Words that appeal to the five senses.
Visual Imagery Images that appeal to the sense of sight/seeing ( shadow, glow,All colors,etc,)
Auditory Imagery Images that appeal to the sense of sound (bang, whisper, laugh,...etc)
Tactile Imagery Images that appeals to the sense of touch/feel (soft, sadness, sticky)
Olfactory Imagery Images that appeal to the sense of smell (odor, perfume, aroma...etc.)
Gustatory Imagery Images that appeal to the sense of taste (spicy, pasta, roasted,...etc)
